Monterrey Mexican was just a shot in the dark for us at first. After doing some white elephant gift shopping at the dollar store next to it, we decided that we both wanted some Mexican food, and decided upon this restaurant. We were in for a great surprise! Of course like any Mexican restaurant, you get your standard chips and salsa (which were tasty). The service was normal for us, was able to be seated right away, and the food came out quick! Pretty good for the price, we will be going back here again! The place looks small from the outside, but it's nice inside!

There was a long hair in my husband's food and the manager tried to blame him for it saying nobody at the restaurant had that long of hair. It was gross.

This restaurant has a lot of "sister" restaurants around town and we love them all. The chips & salsa are always really good, I prefer to enjoy mine with a 32-ounce draft beer (that's cheap too!) while my better half likes the margaritas. I've had almost everything on the menu, and the standouts to me are the carnitas, the tacos de carne azada, the burritos tipicos, the chimichangas, and the tacos de carnitas. The fajitas are good, but not my favorite. They also do the simple stuff really well - my wife loves their soft tacos with chicken, as the chicken is perfectly seasoned and always moist. My in-laws love their taco salads. Beans and rice are always very good too, although the rice can be a bit oily. All around, this is just a very good place and the prices are really fair too. We go to either Monterrey or one of the sister restaurants probably 3x per month.

I've eaten here a number of times. It is very quick turnaround, so it is perfect for a quick dinner. The service suffers as the place gets busier. I've eaten whole meals without getting a refill of my drink. Previously this was excusable because the food and speed outweighed it. I had an awful experience there today where I was served severely under cooked chicken as was my 5 year old daughter. I feel lucky that I even noticed how raw it was. They brought the dish to the back and cooked new chicken and apparently replated the rest of the food with the new chicken. When paying they asked if everything was good, I relayed the disappointment and was told "you can understand that it might be expected with so many tables and being so busy". I don't think I should ever expect to be served under cooked chicken.

Super fast! Went there and my food was deliver within 10 minutes, was fresh, delicious and it was a very generous serving. Will highly recommend!

The service was very nice and attentive. The margaritas were not gonna win any awards but hit the spot after a long day in the sun. Prices are very reasonable. The portions are a bit crazy though, even as a fan of a big dinner, it was a bit excessive how big the entrees were (at least the combination plates). That said, I'm only giving this place 3 stars as the food was all kinda boring. I know they have to appeal to the sometimes bland palate of the West Des Moines costumer but I would have liked something with a bit more flavor and spice. Even the guacamole was a little bland. I'll go back I'm sure and I hope to update this review with more information. My first visit I got a combination plate thinking I could try a bit of everything, next time I will ask for something like a specialty plate and ask for them to spice the hell out of it.

This is some of the worst Mexican food we've ever had. It was very bland. My wife took one byte and that's it. I took four bytes and didn't want to waste the calories by eating more bland food. Panda Express food tastes more like Mexican food than this place. I can't believe this place is still in business. Don't believe the 4 star rating. Note, most of the four star ratings were for their service not their food.

I much prefer this location to the one in Clive. Such fast and friendly service! I definitely think this is one of the better, more affordable Mexican restaurants in town. We were seated immediately and had chips and salsa on the table immediately. The salsa is more on the runny side, and it's not spicy, but flavors are all there. Our food was on the table so quickly... Way faster than any other sit down restaurant I have been too. I ordered the fajita burrito... For less than 8 bucks, I got a very tasty dish that came in a huge portion. I loved the queso they smother on top. My dining partner got Hawaiian fajitas and he liked the sweetness the pineapple added to the dish. The shrimp in the dish gets a little over cooked because it sits on the skillet, which is really the only downside I found. Portions are very very large - you will have leftovers. I wanted more char/grill flavor on the meat, but otherwise very tasty.

Truly average. The only good part about this is closer to my work place.

Always searching for great mexican. Love ya Des Moines but Mexican just ain't your thing. Monterey is about as good as it gets. They truly understand the beauty of understated Mexican food. I have yet to have a bad meal. I do not crave the food at this place like I do at other places across the country but it is legitimately Midwestern good Mexican. If you do Mexican right you do not need to slather it in queso or some other sauce. Clearly this place knows what they are doing.

I've only been here once and it was on a whim on a Saturday around 12:30 p and expected the worst for going in. I was pleasantly surprised that place had ready and available seating. Our waiter was prompt with the chips and salsa and very accommodating of my vegan lifestyle. He was attentive and listened when I said I don't eat meat or dairy. I try not to make too big of a commotion about it but you need to be sure of what you're getting. I got the taco salad without meat and dairy. My only complaint was that they were pretty skimpy with the guacamole and heavy on the iceberg lettuce. I mean, I'm saving you money on not ordering meat you could put a little extra on there for me! The real take away from this restaurant was the chipotle hot sauce they brought to the table at our request. Seriously, this is some heat. It makes ALL the difference! IT IS A MUST ORDER IF YOU GO HERE (and like some heat to your food). So flavorful, so smoky, mmmm. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

When the restaurant has a lunch special called the "Speedy Gonzalez", they have set an expectation. And that expectation was met and exceeded. Lunch at Monterrey is F.A.S.T. with a capital F. Less than 5 minutes after placing our orders, the food was delivered to the table. It was hot, it was tasty and it was definitely Mexican food. No complaints. Chips and salsa were excellent. Not too soupy at all and the chips were *almost* the right thickness for scooping with nice and light salt on 'em. $10 for lunch included the meal, a refilled Ice Tea and I bought a small bowl of queso for the table. Muy bueno!

I find that Monterrey is just like all of their other locations, not bad but not great, thus A-OK food wise. They have your typical Mexican fare. The restaurant itself is really loud inside and normally rather busy. The service is rather quick and friendly enough. I knocked it down to two stars because of this... The bathroom (at least the women's) was gross! The stalls did not have toilet paper in the holders but there was plenty on the floor. They literally just tossed the big rolls on the floor instead of putting them in the holders. Gross! The paper towels were the same way, not in the holder. Thus everyone has to grab the towel roll and soak them to tear off some. If you come, do yourself a favor and use a restroom beforehand and hold it until you leave!

Chips N Salsa...good (wish it had a bit more cilantro, but hey, it's free. Fajita taco salad...solid Strawberry Margarita...pass, tasted too pre-packaged. Great staff, prices and decor. A good pick for Mexican in the WDM area.

The new Monterrey grilled chicken burrito is a hit! Unique flavors from the chicken and tomatillo spices hit your tongue and melt into paradise. The three sauces (cheese, verde & enchilada) top this unique dish and ignite its appeal. Try it with a raspberry margarita, ladies! Two notes: first, does not come with rice and beans, so great for lighter or late appetites. Second, ask for a plate for chips & salsa, they don't bring it to you. They are on Facebook, please Like their page!

Dinner here at five. Had to go find my waiter who was sitting in a booth shooting the breeze with co workers. The food was good. I liked the salsa because it was very mild. Others with me requested and got a spicier version. Solid overall in my book.

My wife and I both had the fajitas here. I had beef and she had shrimp. They both lacked seasoning/flavor. However, the atmosphere was great, the service was good and the price was great! We will eat here again and try something else.

Closer to authentic than tex mex. Not really my thing. I wouldn't rush back. Seems like very low quality food to me.

My favorite Mexican restaurant on the west side. The salsa is unique and delicious every time. The margaritas are fantastic too, we usually end up with two or three pitchers as well, lime on the rocks or some of their flavors too. Generally mango or peach taste great and don't have that extra sugary syrup taste. Everything I've had on the menu (probably over half of the items at this point) are always prepared well, presented wonderfully and hit the spot; however, my favorite menu item here is the Guadalajara special. You definitely have to try it, with or without tortillas. The price is great and is great for large groups of people. 5 stars because it deserves no less in my opinion, every single time I go here.

The service is excellent! At least 2-3 people greeted us when we came in and we were seated immediately. The food is really yummy, love love love the salsa--very fresh with a little heat. I ordered the shrimp fajita quesadilla and it was great! Lots of peppers, onions and tomatoes and tons of shrimp (definitely couldn't eat it with my hands). I also had a regular chicken hard shell taco and it was very tasty. There wasn't any hot sauce so I used the salsa to spice it up. Overall great food, service, and ambience for a great price!

Wow, whatever we try here it is always good. The salsa is made daily and has a very fresh flavor. Tried the lunch Monterrey burrito in chicken ( also comes in steak) and it was covered with three different sauces, each very tasty! The staff is always very quick to take care of your every need.

Had a great lunch. Chicken enchiladas & rice. Service was friendly, quick & food was delicious. Price is very reasonable in fact very low for the quality of food and service.

Went to on the border first and was very disappointed. Wound up here and everything was better. Everything was fresh including chips and salsa. Will come back

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
